4 Tips for Music Students to Get the Most Out of Summer Break

School is out for the year and every student has a chance to break from the classroom, books, homework, tests, and essays for a few months. Music students have the opportunity to take some time off from their in-class practice and performances - at least for a bit. Take advantage of the summer months between classes with our tips below.

Take the Time to Chill

First things first, take some time off. A big part of any training program is the resting period. Classes can get intense, especially around the end of the school year. Take a week or two to vegetate, hang out with friends or on your own, and relax. Use this time to refresh yourself and get some space between yourself and your instrument so you will be even more ready to come back to it. And speaking of returning to music...

Try Out Some Fun Music

Do you have a favorite pop song? What about that summer jam you can’t seem to hear enough of on the radio? Summer is a great time to play around with music that makes you happy. Fall back in love with music by producing the same melodies you hear on YouTube or stream onto your phone. Plus, playing your favorite music is a great way to keep up your skills as you will be practicing listening for the right key, then matching it. The harder you work to produce the same sounds, the better you will be when you go back to classes in the fall.

Get a Jam Session Together

Get a bunch of your music friends together and play some songs you all love! Pick some easy songs from the beginning of class or play around with some songs from that are popular. Working with others can be lots of fun and an excellent way to push yourself to get better. Wanting to bring more options to your group is a great motivator to spend more time with your instrument.

Okay, a Little Practice Won’t Hurt

So it is summer break, but try to squeeze in a few practices per week. Of course, the more you practice, the more you will improve, but at least try to get in two practice sessions a week. Each session doesn’t need to be overwhelming, just a chance for you to reconnect with sheet music, your favorite composers or the ones that have given you a happy challenge, and your instrument.
